V9 - BPM / Beat / OS Mixer

Postby Pitwipe » 05 February 2019, 04:56

Can someone clarify how this functionality works?
From the V9_news.pdf:

Beat
Each trigger forwards the chaser of one step.
Triggerable by :
- mouse
- keyboard (shift + crtl + space)
- OS volume mixer (Windows only). <<<-------------- THIS
- midi clock
- midi note
- external application

Does this mean an audio signal fed to a line-in input (on the Windows host running Showxpress) can be adjusted via the Windows mixer and be made to advance to the next step in the scene? I've read that the Auto-BPM setting (for Windows hosts) is now a hidden setting but how do you monitor the input signal without some kind of feedback from the GUI? (As in the past?)

I've seen support state that tracking BPM via an audio signal is not reliable - is there any planned attempt to address this in V9 or a future version? In my case I'm trying to track a live band via an entire band mix (or just drums) fed to a spare aux send from the board to an input on the Showexpress host.

I also just noticed the locked sticky post at the top of this forum regarding the MTF Showtechnic Sound 2 Light transmitter used for beat detection. The website appears to be down, has there been any advancement on the integration of this tool? The post makes mention of use with V9 (Showexpress presumably?)

how do you monitor the input signal

Main menu > Windows > Audio Spectrum

BPM via an audio signal is not reliable

Yes, this is why we propose other solutions to trigger it.
We do not know an existing library for real time BPM audio analyse.
If you know one doing the job correctly, please let us know.
For us, the only way to give a good BPM, is to know what will be played in advance ; this is why it works so well when the signal comes from "Virtual DJ".

MTF Showtechnic Sound 2 Light transmitter used for beat detection

Yes, Roland from MTF Showtechnic proposes a hardware alternative.
We used it already for demonstrations in a tradeshow.
The result is very good.
Please contact Roland for more details.

To further support's post, I have commented before that yes, while you can take a line in to use that as a beat trigger, that is not the professional way of doing things. You are much better off buying a midi trigger for your drummer and having that input midi signal into your ShowXpress computer. MTF's device is something along these lines, but many other companies create similar devices

Support,

In response to your request -
While I do not have first hand experience with Ableton or this software plugin it appears to perform dynamic BPM analysis and tracking from an analog audio source.

Here is a first hand account of someone using this software for a practical solution.

This software is three years old now so it's likely you are already aware. I did a search of the forums (main search box upper right) and found no references for "beatseeker". If this is applicable and of interest perhaps the author of the plugin would be willing to discuss.

How do I change the icon on the Beat tap button to reflect OS_mixer? (See attached .png)
If I click the Beat tap button with the mouse, it switches to the mouse icon, if I hit CTRL-SHIFT-SPACE it will switch the icon to keyboard but I cannot find a way to select any of the other triggers.

- Icon "Beat from Operating System mixer" is selected in upper right (white)
- The Audio Spectrum panel is up (Nothing visible)
- External audio device (tablet) plugged into 3.5 line-in input and input level confirmed in the Windows 10 device panel (also tried microphone as opposed to line-in)
- I've attached the live.ini
- Speed property of button selected as "Beat"
- V9.1.11 64-bit / Windows 10

You have to switch on the "OS Audio mixer" (only for Windows), which is at the left side of the "Freeze" button.
And you can see the audio signal in the window "main menu > windows > Audio Spectrum".

It has already been enabled. I see input in the OS mixer (in Windows) but nothing in the Audio Spectrum tool.

No, that is my problem. I see no signal within the "Audio Spectrum" window.
- The "Beat from Operating System audio mixer" button (next to freeze) is ON.
- There is input audibly and visibly in the Line-in Windows OS Mixer
- No input in the Audio Spectrum tool
- Looking at the "Beat" button, it still reflects the mouse rather than the OS - I still don't know how to shift the focus from the mouse to the OS mixer.
- This version of Showxpress was patched up to 9.1.11.
