survey - sound to light

Postby support » 16 February 2023, 16:24

Dear all,

We are working on a new module for the next major version of our software to analyze the sound (from the PC sound input) to trigger the lights.

To keep in mind: our software does not know what will be the next song and it does not integrate a list of all songs with their own BPM info, which means our software has to analyse the sound in REAL TIME and then try to output some nice triggers for your lights.

In other words, this process can not be perfect (unless you play only techno music and we can adjust in the module the frequency detection to the drum doing "boum, boum, ..." continuously at 120 BPM :-) ).

Please tell us your wishes.

First thing that comes to mind is a controllable filter section in the input, so that you can choose the "boum, boum" only  or something else, maybe more interesting. An HPF or LPF will do, a bandpass would be better.

Noted for controllable filter section.
We thought something automatic (without frequency adjustments) would be better because you will not have to regularely make adjustments, but this will be obviously less efficient.

Make it an option...? I can really imagine centering the sensitivity on the "boum boum" ;) for a while, then going on the "hihat" section. Just an example.

Noted.

Just a remark: if the "boum boum" stops while the music is still running, there will be no trigger until the "boum boum" starts again.

Probably out of scope, but a true sound to light option where the intensity of the sound across 3 or 4 frequency bands is passed as a DMX value for softer music (Including classical) please. This would allow lights to flow between colours at varying intensities as a light show without the boom boom.

A bit like the good old "modulator / chaser effect" device in the 90s ;-)
Noted.
We will see the mind of the other users.

We were expecting for more feedback.

May be our current "sound to Beat" module is fine for you :-) (?)

Or only a very limited number of users use that function (?)

To be honest I'm officially retired so, no, I probably won't use it myself ! :D This being sa(i)d, I don't see what you can implement apart from some controls in the audio chain: filtering, compression (or expansion ?), all this would finally lead to some kind of beat detection, maybe with multiple DMX commands (hi-mid-low frequencies e.g.).
