Self updating Software

Postby Earl Harvey » 01 October 2014, 08:48

Still a bit confused on how to update software...
Seems it would be easier if software self-updated or a video could be produced to illustrate how to update a fix or executable update...
Thanks!

Software update:
MacOS - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1061
Windows - viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1062

Fix executable update:
MacOS - replace TheLightingController.app by the new one
Windows - replace TheLightingController.exe by the new one

We prefer to show the message "new software version is available" in the welcome black window.
Then we leave the possibility for the user to decide to update or not (some users are still using V6 and do not want to update).
Moreover, software update might be sensible (especially with major new versions).
So it is much more safe for the user to keep both old and new version on his PC.
In case of lightshow compatibility problem with new version, he can straight come back to old version.

In our opinion, self update is indeed not a good choice.

Maybe have the option to auto update or not, so users can select if they want it to self update or not.
Every time I uninstall old, to update to new, a little voice in the back of my head is shitting itself and saying.. I hope to F@@K it doesnt delete all these lighting programs/shows lol

I would definately not support an auto-update at all. My shows are to critical, and using a stable version is the most important aspect. Imagine just before a show, version 6 updated to a so-called stable version of 7.
My pennies worth.

Hi
I think I have used the wrong wording by saying auto updating and have been misunderstood.
I to would not like the software to auto update the way you have said above John.

What I meant was.... Could the software not be made to update without having to uninstall and then reinstalling the newer version.
So basically the software would update by way of user input, either by a popup when software starts up, saying...

New Update Version x.xx.xx
Cancel Update <----- (2 buttons saying this)
don't show message again with a check box <----- (Then this below with a check box in case you don't want to update to new version and don't want message popping up every time you start software)

or/and also a option in the setting menu saying....

Update Now or Look For Update

That way if you then decide at a later date you want to update, you can click on it and update software.
