DMX Patching

Postby Pink LD » 24 September 2014, 03:56

I am working with 7.1.12 SX on a Win8.1 machine and I am having problems with my year old patch. Any of my patches that have more than 10 torn the rest into gibberish.

Here is what I am getting on my ch 7, for example:
107+114+121+128+135+142+149+163+170+177+1538+25856+27648+29440+56320+58112+59904+0+0

Here is what it should be copied from the DMX Inputs file via Notepad:
[7]
priority = software
outputs = 107+114+121+128+135+142+149+163+170+177+184+191+198+205+212+219+226+233+240

Nothing I do seems to work to fix it. I think it is an issue with 7.1.12 because my patch is just fine on my backup 7.1.7 machine.

The number of patched outputs is effectively limited to 10.
We will arrange that the software just cut the line, instead of to write random numbers.

10?!? 10 is useless in my application. 7.1.7 it is just fine. But 7.1.12 and you pull 10 is a limitation crap? Seriously?!? I have to live with a 10 limitation and try to patch in 120k festival rigs to 10?
Get your heads out of your arses and make it work like it used to. 10?!? Bleeding useless!

Sorry about my outburst, it is Roadie Friday on the tour bus and I'm a little lit. But the bottom line is this:
(And if you don't recall I was the one that originally asked for a soft patch panel.)
This is lighting software, not a console. If I wish to patch 511 channels to channel 1, why shouldn't I be able to? 10 channels? Why 10? Why not 20? Or 100? Or 250? or 512?

Why 10?

I am in total agreement with this post. I find it very frustrating when limits are created without any warning. I also have numerous shows that have more than 10 soft patches and thank goodness I still use V6.34 for Live work.

You can link up to 10 outputs to each channel. For instance:
[1]
priority = software
outputs = 110 + 111 + 112 + 113 + 114 + 115 + 116 + 117 + 118 + 119
[2]
priority = software
outputs = 120 + 121 + 122 + 123 + 124 + 125 + 126 + 127 + 128 + 129
...
[15]
priority = software
outputs = 250 + 251 + 252 + 253 + 254 + 255 + 256 + 257 + 258 + 259

I reiterate my initial disgust. 10 outputs?
Please, explain why you think such limitations make the software better than the next guy's software or console?
Since I requested a softpatch ability years ago it has worked fine after the initial bugs, but now, at 7.1.12 it is now limited to 10 outputs?
I went thru hell at my last show explaining to my performers that, "This problem with the patch affecting the wash is just a bug." only to find out from you all, the software makers, that this is not a bug but rather a new limitation that is now a feature?
I am so disgusted with this that I can't even come up with a workaround other than putting all my machines back to 7.1 7 until you can correct this "problem".
GAH!!! Unbelievable!!!

P.S. Thank you John. And if I need a stable copy of 6.34 would you send it to me?

We do not understand you remark.
Nothing has changed regarding this for months (or may be years).
This limitation has always existed (version 6 and version 7) !!!

This limitation has never presented itself until last Saturday. I have been patching 16 channels for years. Of which 4 of those channels have been greater than 10 with no problems until ver 7.1.12
If the limitation has always been in place, you would have heard from a year ago asking why I couldn't patch more than 10 when I instituted the patch I use.
Be that as it may, I will go back to 6.34-7.1.7 where my patch of multiple >10 inputs does work and ask that you consider removing the limitation.
