BPM ignores channel fade/snap setting [fixed]

Postby gregroot » 18 October 2016, 14:37

Hello everyone,

I am running ShowXpress v8.1.29 on Windows. My challenge is that when I set the Light Event properties of a "steps" scene in the timeline to Auto BPM or Manual BPM, the fade/snap setting of each channel in each step of the scene is always "snap". If I've set the channel to the "fade" setting in the step, shouldn't the BPM trigger initiate the fade action? Or, is this just a problem of the 3D viewer (and the outputted DMX is correct)?

In contrast, if I set the Light Event properties of a "steps" scene in the timeline to Manual Speed, then the fade/snap setting of each channel in each step is properly utilized (see below).

I've posted a video on Vimeo of the 3D viewer when the Light Event is set is Manual BPM (which I believe is the wrong behavior): https://vimeo.com/187827467

Here's another video of the 3D viewer output when the Light Event is set to Manual Speed (which I think is the way that the above Light Event setting should behave): https://vimeo.com/187833133

Is this a bug, or have I done something wrong...

The next step can no be faded, because the software does not know when will be the next beat.
So there is no other choice than each new beat snaps to the next step.

Thanks for the reply. The answer is completely reasonable (being a former software developer, myself).

If it must be set to manual to get the fade, then the whole problem can go away by enhancing the software in one of 2 ways:

  1. Support a BPM rate for steps in a "Steps" sequence, or
  2. Increase the number of digits after the decimal point in the duration field of each step in a sequence. For example, at the various BPM's listed below, each beat lasts a portion of a second:
    • 120 BPM = 0.500000 seconds
    • 128 BPM = 0.468750 seconds
    • 129 BPM = 0.465116 seconds (rounded)
As it stands right now, since only 2 decimal points are supported, I can use faded steps on songs that have ONLY the following BPM's: 1,2,3,4,5,8,10,15,16,20,24,25,30,40,48,50,60,75,80,100,120,125,150,200,240,250,300,375,400,500
(actually, there are faster BPM's but the software supports only up to 500 BPM)

Do you see either one of these being a minor enhancement?

Let's says, there are so many other more interesting (in our opinion) new functions to do, in the software.
We will wait to see if other users are concerned with this.

This was a question and concern of mine too- Basically we have a need to aim for tight integration between BPMs and the lightshow and I noticed that it only snapped, not faded. We need fading for the BPM function really for our uses so hopefully it can be included one day.
